Television is full of moments that make can make the viewer feel an overwhelming sense of emotion. Most TV shows are relatable in some respect, even if the show is about a zombie apocalypse, you have to feel for the characters. In television I find that music can make or break a series. The team of people who came together to make the following soundtracks are geniuses with timing and can really pull on heartstrings through a simple song.
Weeds
After losing her husband, Nancy Botwin lives a double life as a drug-dealing mother to Silas and Shane. What began as a small time operation soon becomes more than the trio, along with brother-in-law Andy, can handle. This once-innocent family finds themselves far from home.
Nearly every episode has a different version of the theme song, Little Boxes by a variety of artists including Death Cab For Cutie, Rise Against and The Shins.
Sufjan Stevens, Regina Spektor and The New Pornographers are featured throughout the series. There is a large variety of music fitting perfectly as the show continues, ending quite perfectly with a beautiful song summing up everything the Botwin’s had been through over the eight seasons by Rilo Kiley.
The OC
The OC was a short, four-season teen drama, but was everything that it needed to be. As viewers followed the lives of Ryan, Marissa, Seth and Summer and watched the four fall in love, they also fell in love with the soundtrack.
Titles that stick out through the shows most memorable moments include, Forever Young by The Youth Group, Nada Surf’s cover of If You Leave and of course the theme song of the show California by Phantom Planet.
Episodes from the show included musical performances by Death Cab For Cutie, Rooney and The Walkmen at local hotspot The Bait Shop.
How I Met Your Mother
This tells the story of how Ted Mosby meets the love of his life. This sitcom is a light-hearted romantic comedy following the lives of 20-something’s living in New York dealing with whatever life throws their way.
The soundtracks over the nine seasons were great, but season seven and eight really stuck out with great songs by The Decemberists, Radiohead, and Band of Horses.
500 Miles by The Proclaimers became a bit of an anthem to the show, with quite the back-story revolving around Ted and Marshall’s friendship.
The show had many memorable and comical musical numbers by all of the cast members including, Cat Funeral and Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit.
Grey’s Anatomy
This evening soap opera brings you into lives of surgical interns working around the clock. Grey’s takes you on an emotional journey of love, loss, triumph and salvation with a soundtrack to back every tear filled moment.
Music by The Fray, Metric, Feist and John Legend showcase some of the most memorable moments. The soundtrack from the show makes a great playlist for almost any mood.
One of the most recognizable songs from Grey’s would be Snow Patrol’s, “Chasing Cars”. The song appears a few times though the show. The cast does a cover of the song in their musical episode.
Gossip Girl
A six-season teen drama revolving around the lives of “Manhattan’s elite.” Starting at a prep school in New York, Serena Van Der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf live star-studded lives. Life becomes a little more complicated when jealousy and a wandering eye come in to play.
One of the most memorable music moments took place at a Mascaraed party. “Secret” by The Pierces was the perfect song. It is dark and sensual in this particular moment.
The show contains a variety of indie, pop and alternative artists definitely worth checking out including, The Kooks, Sum 41 and Motion City Soundtrack.
